TOEIC Part 3 & 4: Read ahead, don't chase the audio

Xin chào! Week two of the part-by-part series: Part 3 (conversations) and Part 4 (talks). This is the longest stretch of the listening test, and the part my students improve fastest once they learn one habit.

The habit: always be reading ahead

You cannot listen and read at the same time, so do the reading before the audio. The rhythm:

1. During the instructions, read the first set of three questions.
2. While the audio plays, keep your eyes on those questions and mark answers as you hear them; the questions almost always come in order.
3. During the 8-second gaps, do not check your last answer. Move on and read the next set. Your ears stay one step ahead of the speakers.

If you miss a question, guess immediately and let it go. Chasing one lost question costs you the next three.

What to read for

You have seconds, not minutes, so read with a purpose:

• Underline the key word in each question: problem, suggest, next, where.
• Glance at the answers only for questions about numbers or times. Hearing "the 3:30 meeting moved to 4" means nothing if you haven't seen the options.
• For graphic questions (Part 3), study the chart during the gap. The answer usually needs one connection: what the speaker says + one row of the table.

Paraphrase is the whole game

The audio says "we're short-staffed"; the answer says "not enough employees." When you review practice tests, collect these paraphrase pairs in your mistake journal; they repeat across real tests more than any grammar point.
