Your TOEIC score report, explained

23 September 2026 · Cô Trâm

Xin chào! Many of you sat the test over the past few weeks, and the score report has arrived. A number on a page is not very useful on its own, so today: how to read the whole report, line by line.

The two numbers that make the total

Listening is scored from 5 to 495, Reading from 5 to 495, and the total runs from 10 to 990. These are scaled scores, not a count of correct answers, so do not try to turn them back into a percentage.

The useful part is the gap between the two. A hundred points or more between Listening and Reading tells you which half of the test your next month belongs to, far more clearly than the total does.

The abilities measured bars

Under the scores, the report splits each section into skill lines: understanding the main idea, understanding details, making inferences about what is implied. Read them like this:

  1. Compare the bars with each other, not with other people. Your own lowest bar is your next study block.
  2. Match each weak line back to a part of the test. Inference lines point at Part 3 and 4 and the harder Part 7 questions; vocabulary lines point at learning words by topic.
  3. Do not over-read one low bar. Some of these lines rest on only a handful of questions, so treat a single dip as a hint, not a verdict.

What schools and employers actually read

In most cases, only the total, and sometimes the Listening and Reading split. Keep the official report safe, save a photo and a PDF copy, and note that most schools and employers accept a score for two years from the test date. Put that expiry in your calendar the day the report arrives, not two years later when someone asks.

The first thing to do with it

Open your mistake journal and give the test one page: the date, the total, the two section scores, your two weakest ability lines, and one honest sentence about what felt hard on the day. Ten minutes now is worth more than the hour you will spend trying to remember it in March.

Next week: how to decide whether to sit the test again. Hẹn gặp lại! 🌸
